At the halfway mark of their class, Petrov instructed them to use the full shoulder with any other defensive move or position they’d learned in the last few weeks.

“Again, this is about self-defense.” He walked through the rows of grappling students with his hands clasped behind his back. “Using your awareness and self-control to disarm and even defeat a larger, seemingly stronger adversary. It’s not about brute strength. I know all of you showed up at this school with at least half a brain, so use it!”

Bodies slammed against the mat. Students grunted and tossed each other around.

A brilliant flash of green light burst from where Alex and Brandon sparred. The Wood Elf successfully got the Crystal over his shoulder and onto the mat a second before two thick, glowing vines shot from his hands and wrapped themselves around Brandon’s arms, pinning them to his sides.

“Hey! What are you—”

Alex jerked the Crystal backward toward him and wrapped both arms around the other kid’s neck before getting his ankles hooked around the bigger guy’s waist. Brandon roared and tried to get up, but the Wood Elf had him fully pinned.

“Yes!” Petrov smacked his hands together and pointed at Alex, who gritted his teeth and struggled to keep Brandon’s arms from breaking the hold and most likely smashing in his face. “That! Using what you already have to get the job done. Excellent, Montoya. Now, Everly, try to break the rear mount.”

“I can’t!” the Crystal kid bellowed.

“Then you’re still learning. Keep going!”

Alex released his partner, and they both struggled to their feet. “Hey, that was good—”

“That was a cheap shot,” Brandon snarled. “He never said to use magic.”

“I never said not to use magic, Everly,” Petrov cut in. “Only to use your head. Go again.”

Blake finally turned back toward Amanda after watching the spectacle and let out a nervous chuckle. “Good thing you don’t have magic, right?”

“What?”

“Oh, I didn’t mean… I’m just saying… You know…”

“Uh-huh.” Amanda smirked and waved for Blake to get started again with the sparring. “Feel free to use yours, though. I can take it.”
